All The Music That Fits
Way back in the Dark Ages..say 1963...I had the good fortune to fall, quite by accident, into the world of rock radio. There I was, an innocent country bumpkin, stranded in the thrilling wasteland of West Texas.

Sweet Bird of Youth ?
(What's up with that salute?) |
Pure of heart, clear-eyed, stalwart, and, sadly, dumb as a bag of hammers! I could easily have continued down the path set for me from childhood and taken my rightful place as head of the family business (Weasel Breeding). Sadly, this would never come to pass. A chance encounter with legendary Texas broadcaster and journalist Tumbleweed Smith, put the brakes on my headlong rush to obscurity. Before long, I was working as his intern at the local radio station, learning broadcast journalism. As time passed, I weaseled my way into a late night slot on the air. I was hooked! To make this long story somewhat shorter...This chance encounter took me down a road which ultimately led to Dallas, Houston and San Francisco. Along the way, I had the good fortune to stumble into the (then) new form of broadcasting that was beginning to catch the ears of young audiences...Rock Radio on FM.
Weirdly Cool
(or is it the other way around?)

Throughout the 50's and early 60's, AM Radio was King! FM was merely a poor stepchild, relegated to playing elevator music or educational programming. As the Sixties drew to a close, a new type of radio station began to appear on the FM band, playing music that didn't fit into the homogenized formats of the big AM radio powerhouses.
It is impossible to convey with mere words, what that was like! I found myself (along with many others) forever changed by the experience. Much time has passed and Rock Radio, sadly, has passed into that sad state we find it in today. Just as the AM Radio powerhouses fell victim to corporate pressures and programming consultants, who took control of the music and took the soul out of rock radio, the FM pioneers suffered the same fate.
The 60's been 'bery 'bery good to me! |
Many of us moved on to other fields but never forgot the magic that was Rock Radio.
Enough about me...This is, after all, about the music and the communication between the programmer (me) and the listener (you). I don't have any illusions about this project. I don't expect the world to beat a path to my (virtual) doorstep. I don't expect to turn this project into a media powerhouse. I will be happy if people drop by occasionally and listen to the music. The "format" for will be music from the sixties and seventies. I may make an occasional left-turn at Albuquerque and send the station spinning out of control on some strange tangent....but that is, after all, what this internet radio thing is about, isn't it? Blind devotion to a "format" killed the creativity of FM radio. So excuse me if I take a side-trip in some strange new direction. I promise it will all make sense, eventually. And I promise to bring all of you home on time and, relatively, undamaged.
I am always open to suggestions (within reason) and will try to answer any emails that might come my way. So feel free to email me at: radio@stagedude.com.
